Non-English language translation best practices

Maintenance Connection supports multiple languages, allowing each user to view the application in their desired language. By implementing the best practices given in this article, translations can display throughout nearly the entire the system. These best practices include an overview of how translations work in MC, as well as instructions for system administrators and/or IT personnel to improve upon the standard multi-language functionality.

Multi-language display overview

Each user can define the language displayed in their MC sessions by selecting their preferred language from the login page or using the language control in the top right corner of the Main Application (MRO).

Labels on the screen then display in the chosen language. The first time you select a language other than English, the system translates labels on the fly using Google Translate. The system then stores these translations for the future for quicker access.

This feature only translates labels into the chosen language. Data stored within the fields/cells of the system displays in the language in which it was entered.

Given the limitations of Google Translate, the following segments give some ways to improve translations for your system.

Use the Smart Label Manager to improve translations

Users with access to the Smart Label Manager can improve language display by manually translating labels as needed.

  1. Make sure you have already changed the language display to your preferred language, as described in the previous segment.

  2. Open View>Settings and select Smart Label Manager.

    All editable labels are underlined.

  3. Hover over an editable label and update it as needed.

Updates to language displays via the Smart Label Manager only affect the logged-in user.

Language pack installation (French, Spanish, German)

Maintenance Connection has put together language packs for French, Spanish, and German to improve upon Google Translate.

These language packs save a custom language display for a user. Once you install a language pack, you can access the language display by selecting the (Custom) option associated with the chosen language. For example, after installing the French language pack, select the French (Custom 1) option to view the installed translation.

Here are some things to keep in mind about these language packs:

  • The Spanish language pack verifies translation accuracy for almost 90% of the system.
  • The French and German language packs verify translation accuracy for almost 50% of the system.

In order to improve translations in areas of the system not verified by the language packs, users need to manually translate these areas with the Smart Label Manager, as described in the previous segment.

Translation Manager

The Translation Manager (available in the Tools > System menu) lets you manage translations of global labels and user-entry data across the Main Application (MRO). You can edit translations directly in the tool.

There is also a feature available for purchase which lets you allow/disallow the system to automatically translate values on its regular sync and remove all saved translations for the values currently open in the window to return them to the system default translation.

Translate default work order reasons

Turn on the Work Order > Defaults > Default reason language preference to translate default, auto-generated work order reasons into non-English languages. Default work order reasons generated for follow up work orders and meter readings outside of the acceptable range translate into the selected language on the work order.

Language management for MC Express

The language display defined in the Main Application (MRO) carries over to the user's sessions in MC Express. Technicians who do not typically access the Main Application (MRO) may need assistance from their system administrator in setting up their preferred language for MC Express.

Installed language packs applied in the Main Application (MRO) should also carry over to MC Express, but updates made to a language display using the Smart Label Manager do not carry over. If you need assistance manually improving translations in MC Express, submit a request to our Support team.

Language management limitations

  • The lettered tab in lookup dialogs cannot display European or double-byte characters (like Chinese), nor can the tab be disabled.
  • Customers must install a patch in order for double-byte characters to display properly. Submit a request to our Support team in order to have this patch installed.
  • Also applicable to those using double-byte characters, there are slightly modified instructions for upgrading to the latest On Premise version of Maintenance Connection.
